VFR400Z (NC21)
Overview:
Completely different from the VF400F model. Honda's first gear-driven cam,
water-cooled V4 engine configuration featured a 180° crank. Cutting-edge
technology in 1986 and still more than adequate today. Alloy twin-spar frame .
1987 model has bigger front discs and Higher revving motor redline at 16000 RPM ..
It's
a fantastic bike. It has useful power from 3,500RPM through to the 14,000
'red-line' and does not require continuous gear changes to keep it on the boil.
It looks gorgeous and trick, even though it's 13 years old.
It
has an official top speed of 208 kph (130 mph), but I've seen 230 kph on mine.
It is fairly heavy for a 400 and the first gear is quite tall requiring a fair
amount of clutch slip when pulling away, so quarter mile times are
disappointing. I've fitted a 44T rear sprocket instead of the standard 45T. This
improves tractability but lowers the top end speed down to 180 kph.
By
and large, the bike performs and is reliable. If you want to go for relatively
short blasts through the "twisties" with some mates, and you're not
intending on touring, it's a good choice.
